A group of really, really clever people last night joined in a BBC panel discussion to let the alarmed watching world know that Premier League clubs have spent ‘a little bit too much money.’ The panel, largely made up of people who have made extraordinary amounts of money out of football denied the problems were down to greedy money men trying to make extraordinary amounts of money out of football.
West Ham chairman David Gold said ‘money money money money money money, give me money!’ whilst chief executive of the PFA Gordon Taylor said that the large amounts of debt had ‘absolutely nothing to do’ with players demanding more money than is physically printed each week.
Taylor added ‘if we want to see the best players performing averagely without passion week in week out, then fans need to accept they’ll have to pay the price of a small time share in Costa Brava to get into home matches against Burnley. These debts are not a problem as long as you close your eyes and don’t think about them. Besides, by the time it all goes completely tits up, I’ll be sipping cocktails in my big beach side mansion in the south of France so let’s keep spending and let someone else worry about it later.’
